Justice new Documentary!!! out 24th November!!

The Dutch Ministry of Finance organized an architecture competition for which a selected group of architectural offices (unstudio, nox, …) and artists were invited. The goal of the competition was not to design a building, but the new 5 euro commemorative coin with the theme ‘Netherlands and Architecture’. The winner will be rewarded with a nice price, but most of all with the honor: his design will be realized and will be a legal coin within the Netherlands.

“Work or art? Expression of the plastic arts, or the simple carrying out of an order for the purposes of commercial interest? Is there any appeal in seeing the work exhibited, detached from its original
purpose? Can an illustration stand alone outside of its original context? These are the eternal dilemmas of the illustrator, who always puts the setting, idea and function of an image before his own concerns and identity, a creator always at the service of communication.
Berto Martínez tries to keep himself poised on the border between
the personal and the distanced, of that which interests him and that which is imposed. He aims to find a language that allows him to manifest himself in the commissioned work, without losing
sight of his personal vision and manner of creation, his own way of understanding the image.
From fashion illustration to opinion pieces, Martínez’ work addresses various subjects and reflects on the role of illustration in the media, on its different uses and applications, always in search of new media and formats.
This exhibition brings together a selection of his recent works.
